The Neutral Golf Swing

A golf swing that feels simple and repeatable usually starts with a backswing that has fewer variables. The goal is not to create perfect positions. The goal is to make the way back to the ball easier.

Neutral golf setup position
1. Neutral setup
A simple swing starts from a neutral address position. The arms hang naturally under the shoulders, the body is balanced, and there is no unnecessary tension before the club starts moving.
Neutral takeaway in the golf swing
2. Neutral takeaway
At the end of the takeaway, the club should not be pulled too far inside or pushed too far outside. The leading edge of the clubface is close to parallel with the spine angle, and the movement is created more by the body than by an early wrist action.

3. How the movement connects
In this video, you can see how the setup and takeaway connect into one flowing backswing. The key is that the club does not have to be manipulated with the hands. The body movement helps the club move into a more neutral position naturally.

Neutral top of backswing position
4. Neutral top position
At the top of the backswing, the lead wrist is relatively flat and the club is in a neutral position. The club is not across the line. From here, it is much easier to bring the club back to the ball without major compensations.
Centered body turn in the backswing
5. Centered body turn
A good backswing is not only about the club. The shoulders turn strongly, while the hips and knees respond naturally. The trail knee may straighten slightly, the lead knee can move slightly forward, and the body still turns in a centered way around the spine.

These positions are not meant to make your swing look robotic. They simply help reduce unnecessary variables, so you have fewer compensations to make in the downswing.

But every golfer is different. If you are not sure what you should work on in your own swing, or how to turn these concepts into a clear practice plan, we can help you with individual feedback, drills, and structured training inside the GolfSkool Mastermind.
